Current charter market situation
Mediterranean charter seasons 2020 / 2021
Since the first advisory report last year much has changed. Governments have closed countries from international traveling, also the harbours and marinas are closed. The charter business is in full lock down, charter operators are struggling in keeping their clients with them. We expect that this year the charter business will not be able to start-up intime and recover from the big economical blow we currently experience.
Every crisis has an end, also this pandemic will be over in within a year. As soon as the governments start lifting the restrictions we can see how much we can safe of this season. I believe that we should focus on 2021, though. The new season is exactly one year away and I expect charter guest dare to travel again in Q2 next year too.

If I look at the Mediterranean area and take the countries into account where most charter guests come from in combination with the expected reluctance to travel by plane I expect the charter countries nearest to the Austrian and German borders to bounce back first. Slovenia and Croatia will be the countries where I expect to charter business to start again first, because these areas are within reach of traveling by car from central European countries. If the airlines can offer a safe environment on board of their airplanes I expect the charter guests from other countries will come too and other sailing areas will pick up again.

The Caribbean charter market
If we try to predict the developments in the Caribbean charter markets we have to look at many variables and one of them is where their primary target group of charter guests comes from, and that is, unfortunately, the United States of America. The USA is the country with the most extensive spread of infected people and will become the country with the highest number of casualties.
How hard the Coronavirus has hit the worldwide sailing areas until now, can be compared by looking at the reported cases with infection per 100.000 residents per country. The reported cases in the Caribbean are much lower than in many western countries where most of the charter guests come from. The BVI only has 10 out of 100k, and St Vincent & the Grenadines even less. Please have a look at the table next to this article.

Although many Caribbean islands are less affected by the current pandemic, most of the charter guests come from the USA. The Caribbean charter market will be affected considerably, because the people from the USA will need time to get over the impact of this health crisis.
At this moment we believe that the European charter market will bounce back quicker than in the Caribbean. However, we will host regular meetings with the companies in the charter industry to keep a finger on the pulse of the international charter market. If we have to alter our predictions, you will be the first to know as one of our consultancy clients.

New investment window
Currently, all charter investors who have assigned Yacht-Match to support them on their purchase journey continue with their plans. Our clients understand that investing in a charter yacht is a mid-term investment. Your vessel is part of a business plan, with a scope of 5 to 7 or even 10 years. It’s seldom that during a business plan we don’t experience an economic downturn of some kind. The actual economic situation is unique, but we have the certainty that it will end sooner or later.
After a season with limited opportunities to sail or charter a boat a new season without restrictions will be highly attractive for leisure marine consumers. To be able to offer a new catamaran in the 2021 market with charter clients anxious to sail again, the window of opportunity is now.
Purchase opportunities

Shipyards are struggling with the delivery of their boats, yacht buyers or dealers are struggling to get the yachts financed. This toxic combination will result in a postponed sales season, late deliveries and cancelled purchases.
With this scenario, we expect opportunities to arise soon. Yacht-Match is in contact with all shipyards, hundreds of charter operators, and dozens of dealers. Like the spider in a web we are in the middle of the international leisure marine market and we will be the first to know where an occasion surfaces.
If the occasion matches your preferences, we need to be in the position to react immediately. The only way we can respond in time is when you trust us a substantial down payment, which we will use to negotiate the purchase of the vessel against best possible conditions.
Next consultancy steps
-FACILITATE-To allow us to catch the best opportunity when it comes by, we request for a substantial first down payment of 30% of the expected purchase value
-CHOOSE- We expect to come with a best matching offer within three months. Three months because it will happen in the current sales season, the companies need to lower their prices to sell stock or ordered boats.
- SPECIFY- after securing the opportunity, we will spec the boat to your preferences and the demands of the charter market.
- INVESTIGATE- while the ordering process is underway we will research the charter market for the sailing area with the best expected return on investment
-CUT THE KNOT- after choosing the right boat, and best sailing area, selecting the right charter operator is the next step
