Current charter market situation
What are my choices - what yacht & destination?
With Yacht-Match, your choice is limitless. We work out what is best for you and tailor that to suit your needs and the expectations of sustainable charter management and business case.
We accept owners version yachts and have flexible contract lengths, together with the option to go sailing around the world and use other yachts in the fleet, or choose to change the location of your own yacht.
We match your preferred choice of yacht with the best matching operator and the conditions of the charter management.
We represent the options of +144 models at +30 different locations in the most sought after sailing destinations.
The yacht you choose, will have direct implications of how you finance the yacht, what owners benefits you will receive, where you can place the yacht for the best case scenario.

Selecting the Yacht
In all scenarios, the charter management facilitates a cost-and hassle free ownership. With Yacht-Match you are able to use your boat as much as like without being limited to points or strict category system of owners weeks as found with the big time-share charter companies.
Thus, you are able to sail all year around, and whenever you are not, we make sure you are compensated and that you have the freedom of choice.
Here is a overview of the yachts and expected charter projections: (with optimal layout)
Monohulls 38-42 ft (3 cabin)
NET income to owner ca 6-8%/ROI yearly for the first 6 years
Monohulls 43-47ft (4-5cabins)
NET income to owner ca 8-9%/ROI yearly for the first 6 years
Monohulls 48-55ft (4-6cabins)
NET income to owner ca 9-10%/ROI yearly for the first 6 years
Multihulls 40-45ft (4 cabins)
NET income to owner ca 8-10%/ROI yearly for the first 6 years
Multihulls 46-50ft (5-6 cabins)
NET income to owner ca 9-10.5%/ROI yearly for the first 6 years
Your Investment - the yacht's expected depreciation
It’s evident that the majority of private buyers on the second hand market is not favouring a typical charter boat when it becomes available and listed on the pre-owned market. That is why our charter management and our selected charter operators are independent and smaller, with more attention to maintenance and most often a fleet with private boats, which are managed professionally by a charter operators.
The boats will have layouts that more commonly found in private ownership and wont be tagged with typical charter stickers and promotional striping. Most often its wise to upgrade the equipment/specification to match your wishes and what we believe is the most attractive for both the charter market and the re-sale market. The winter maintenance programs with our operators also prolong the boat’s longevity and makes them visibly more appealing to the second-hand market.
Generally, we would expect OUR client’s monohulls to be dropping ca 35-40% after year 6 and the catamarans ca 25-30% after 6 years. Thanks to well maintained boats that are essentially kept as private boats without the hallmark signs of a charter fleet, we are able to broker our clients boats for 10-20% more than traditional charter boats.
With traditional charter programs also comes the pressure of taking the boat over at the end of the contract. We are able to extend the charter periods, thus helping our clients to broker the yachts during an extended year or two in charter and elevating the pressure and constraints of end of term contracts.
Multihulls are gaining momentum
The share of multihulls in the total production is growing stronger than that of the monohulls, this mostly to the expense of bigger monohulls. The charter clients feel more attracted to multihulls in the same price bracket as bigger monohulls. The trend towards enjoying your free time on board instead of sailing as a sportive activity is continuing.
Since 3-4 years and for a foreseeable future, the pre-owned market for catamarans with high re-sale prices and rate of sales, indicate that investing in a new catamaran for charter makes more than practical sense and is even being considered as a wise investment scenario. With re-sale values close to 75% of the original purchasing prices and as little as 30% depreciation after 5-7 years (based on owners version cats).

Short window of opportunity
Because Yacht-Match maintain a boating industry wide network, we have a good insight in the opportunities the current market has to offer. Yacht-Match will act on any opportunity to get you an of the stock listed catamaran for season 2020 equipped fully to your preferences and matching the demands of the charter market you target at. The window of opportunity is not wide, with our network and together with the yards we expect to have sold most of the attractive production slots in during the week of Boot 2020 in Dusseldorf.
Market development
As written in my former report big charter companies have placed their orders for 4-500 boats for 2020 delivery with the best delivery dates. Private buyers who buy their boats at dealers and charter operators are left with the production crumbs, as so to speak.
The market in Croatia is overheating with too many yachts, too little space in marina’s and too high increase of costs for berths, moorings, restaurants etc. We’ve seen charter companies allocating their yachts to other sailing areas such as Greece.
Some weaker brothers will collapse under the pressure of too little cash flow, which will clean up the local market undoubtedly. Greece have seen a growth of amount of yachts from other countries and will see an influx of new yachts next year, mostly bought by not yet existing mini charter ventures, not knowing the market that well yet.
Turkey is a market where more and more of the bigger international charter companies are returning to. The destination has a very strong local charter operations with highly rated smaller charter operators that are seeing all time high numbers since the disappearance of the international charter fleets. The market has a very high demand for catamarans as the clients are coming from the motor yacht market and the destination has barely no new catamarans to be chartered.
The Balearics sigh and sputter under the burden of too many holidaymakers, exponentially increased costs and lack of berths for boats and yachts.
2021 season has already started
For those looking to make their dream to own a yacht come true in 2021 now is the time to act. As your consultants we are always on the lookout for opportunities, not only for 2020 but also for 2021 or even further in the future. Although it seems a bit odd at first sight but investing in a yacht for 2021 starts this month and I’ll explain why.
Now is the time for the charter world to take positions. Charter companies and charter investors currently secure the best production slots for the next season(s). The best production slots are planned with probable delays in mind. Depending of the type of yacht and the connected time needed to get her sailing and charter ready, the window of deliveries will be between November 2020 and February 2021. The earlier the better for big boats, because of the amount of work which must be done before she will be totally ready for their first season.
To consider is that the average yard delivery times are currently 6 to 8 months, for certain models even 13 months till two years and rapidly increasing with every next month.
For marketing purposes making your choice before the summer is important too. The earlier we will promote your boat to the charter world and especially the charter agents the earlier they start offering her to their charter clients. We will make sure together with the charter operator that the top 50 charter agents will remember your yacht the moment they have a matching client in the chat or on the line.
Evaluation hot spots
-The Balearics are expensive in all aspects. Same can be said about South of France. Italy is still a sailing destination which lacks attraction from target groups outside of its country.
-BVI shows similar numbers as in the Med's. but cope with higher costs. By contrasts the Grenadines might create slightly less turnover but have lot less operational costs. Emerging Colombia offer opportunities for those who see the purchase of a pre-owned yacht purely as an investment
- In the Far-East there are a lot of emerging markets and Thailand. Thailand is starting to become mature with more operators and more up to date boats, mainly catamarans. Rest of the Far-East is less certain.
- Turkey is the place to invest because of increasing demand and insufficient amount of boats available. A well equipped +45-50ft catamaran will make 20-30% more than compared to the rest of the Med's.
- Charter hotspot Croatia was getting saturated not in the least because of a lack of enough and affordable berths in marinas up until 2019. This year it has turned around, as we have seen a few of the well known boutique operators being purchased by the multinational charter business and at the same time - the big charter operators are struggling and have decided to move big parts of their fleets abroad. The Croatian market is still the most secure and well rounded destinations for all investors preferences.
-Greece is showing good numbers for 2019, but will see a peak in competition in 2020-2024, because of the EU funded Greek government investment subsidy
-The Maldives and Mauritius seem to be emerging, but still need to be developed in terms of moorings and marinas. For those looking for more adventurous investment these spots in the Indian ocean are well worth considering.
Consultants advice
My colleague and co-founder Dirk Agter and I strongly advise, based on the premise that you would like your yacht to be delivered in time for the 2021 European sailing season, to take advantage of the current situation and allow yourself a stress free purchase journey and on time start of your intelligent yacht ownership.
Our suggested approach
Now we can do the best operational job and make a difference for you. Instead, if you would postpone your decision till let say late Q2 2020, and you would only then assign us to create you the best yacht ownership solution, we can only hope for the crumbs and left overs in production slots. We wouldn’t be able to dictate what we want and how we want it. We would be in a disadvantage comparing to securing the best production slot for you now.
We are aiming towards providing you with the relevant options and specify a offer for your chosen catamaran before the end of Q1 (ideally late Feb/ early March 2020).
Therefore, based on our experience and with the business intelligence presented, we ask your permission to act now on your behalf and together have the upper hand.
- Specific advice
- Best choice
- Get what you demand
- Secure production slot
- Possible Start 2021 season now
- Secure the production slot for delivery 2021
- Lock early 2020 prices
- In time specification

Your yacht will be handed over and commissioned by Yacht-Match together with your chosen charter operator that is responsible from day one to make your yacht charter ready and prepare the yacht for her first season. You will get an introduction and welcoming by the operator, which might include an introduction course held by either Yacht-Match or a dedicated skipper to get familiar with the yacht and perform your first manoeuvre courses with her.
Your purchase acquisition in practice
To be enable us to act the moment we need to, you are advised to do a down payment and we ask your permission to use your down payment to reserve the best available production slot and lock the early 2020 price for you. This of course after your approval. The suggested time path would be:
- Late Feb/ early March 2020: 30% down payment on our trust account, based on the most probable boat type – we are taking in offers from different ship yards during November/ December before we sit down in with the respective sales managers at the yards at Boot 2020 in Dusseldorf . Negotiations are ongoing.
- Feb: Chosen yacht and a confirmed production slot, we will make sure you will get a confirmation (2020 prices, no price increase).
- Late Q2 2020: Specify yacht equipment, match with charter operator, start promotion boat. The sooner we have delivery time, the better conditions we are facing to start marketing the boat already now.
- Q4 2020: rest payment and delivery, transport and commissioning.
- Late Q4 2020: charter make ready, set up investors company etc.
- Q2 2021: ready for chartering and prepare for start charter season.
- Late Q2 2021: Handover to owner and maiden voyage.
For those looking to make their dream to own a yacht come true in 2021 now is the time to act.
As your consultants we are always on the lookout for opportunities, not only for 2021 but also for 2020 if the chances may occur to get hold of a unique opportunity.
