Nautitech 40 Open: Swedish Boat Test in 40kt

Cruising sailing catamarans are traditionally valued for their spaciousness and comfort, often at the expense of sailing performance and feeling at the helm. The Nautitech 40 Open defies this stereotype. Recently tested off the coast of Ellös on Orust (Sweden) by Skippo, it demonstrated exceptional responsiveness and agility, even in challenging conditions with wind gusts up to 7 to 8 Beaufort (40-45 knots of wind). The catamaran’s slender hulls significantly enhance its sailing capabilities, delivering a thrilling and dynamic experience. The superior building technique of the Nautitech catamarans, with narrower bow entry and hulls and deeper keel than most production series cruising catamarans, all made in high-grade material and a fully vacuum-infused process, making it a very stiff and well-balanced sailing catamaran, once again proves why its the sailors choice among the cruising catamarans and sailing journalist alike.

Previously, the Nautitech 40 Open had primarily been evaluated and tested by sailing journalists in calm waters. It’s remarkable performance in Sweden’s rough seas and cold weather underscores its robust design and versatility. This test review of the Nautitech 40 Open proved its ability to excel in demanding environments, making it an ideal choice for the unpredictable waters of Scandinavia.

In addition to its performance, the Nautitech 40 Open offers expansive social spaces, comfortably accommodating up to 12 people. Its forward-thinking design, particularly in the helm station and overall layout, appeals to sailors who value well-designed and practical features.

Nautitech 40 Open: Boat Test in 40 knots of wind!

“Comfortable catamarans with lots of living space are hopelessly sluggish cans that move forward like a louse on tarred bark. And then they are completely hopeless at cruising speeds. Or are they? See the test!”

Skippo, the leading Swedish digital boat magazine, did a never-before-seen boat test of a cruising catamaran in what would have been nightmare conditions for any other production series cruising catamaran on the market. The test took place right after the “Öppet Varv” boat show at the infamous Hallberg-Rassy shipyard on the island of Ellös on the west coast of Sweden. Both reporters, Gustav Morin and Alfred Ahlberg went out with the owner of the boat and the team from Yacht-Match sailing the Ellösefjorden and passed the infamous Gullholmen as the boat was prepped for a real treat for anyone that loves sailing and want to test the boat how it it behaves in weather and rough seas.

Their comprehensive test of the Nautitech 40 Open provides valuable insights into the catamaran’s capabilities, showcasing its appeal to both seasoned sailors and newcomers. Skippo highlighted a commitment to integrating performance, comfort, and innovation in sailing. The Nautitech 40 Open represents this vision, offering an unparalleled sailing experience for enthusiasts seeking versatility and excitement. The Nautitech 40 Open offers the perfect combination between a safe and weather-protected and balanced boat or short-handed crew, and for live-aboard and blue water cruising with the “open concept” living and high-end comfort that the shipyard is so famously known for since its re-launch in 2019 and updated range of models (Nautitech 41 Type S, 44 Open and 48 Open).

About Skippo and the reporters:

Gustav Morin is the editor-in-chief of Skippo.se and a well-known profile in Swedish boating journalism. As a professional sailor, he has participated in prestigious competitions, including sailing a lap around the world as media manager in the Volvo Ocean Race and as a grinder in the America’s Cup, which gives him a deep understanding of both the technical and adventurous sides of boating. His colleague Alfred Ahberg covers sailing and racing as well as news in the boating industry and boating in general.
