These are the most sought after yachts for live-aboard yachting in the midrange size of catamarans. They have both had excellent response from the market and tremendous appraisal from the professionals. The Seawind is not so well known yet to the market as there has been some delay in production and we are yet to see one in Europe.

The Nautitech 44 Open is the latest design from the renowned naval architect Marc Lombard, who also designed the successful Nautitech 40 and Nautitech 46 and 47. You will recognise the Nautitech DNA in all aspects of this 13-meter catamaran; relatively lightweight, because of the infusion production technique using Divinicel core throughout the structure, including the main bulkheads. Best in class weight to sail area ratio. Lively yet safe sailing performance. T
he “Nautitech Open” concept is further optimised based on the Nautitech owner’s survey, by assigning dedicated areas in the total space of the inside/outside saloon.
The outside saloon offers three sofas for use while at sea or during meals or just relaxing, the inside saloon has a lounge area, a forward-facing navigation desk which can double as a home office and a sternwards facing L galley, with extra counter space and cupboards in the front of the saloon.
One of a kind is the central raised table or bar, conveniently places next to the mast pole. It’s here where the crew will meet for their morning coffee, to discuss the weather and routing or where one can easily check its email standing up.
The steering positions are where they should be; in the back of the hulls and as near as the waterline as possible; you will feel safe, will be able to check the sails conveniently and be part of the rest of the crew, because you’re at the same level. The steering pedestals give a real big boat feel and give space for wide aft cabin windows, which create a bright atmosphere in the two hulls together with the large hull windows and many recessed deck hatches.
The volume of the cabins benefits from the stepped hull just above the waterline and the flared topsides. Large beds, lots of storage spaces and unique layouts are inviting you to stay on board.
OPTIONAL: Electric or hybrid propulsion

The first Seawind 1370 is not yet on the water, but comes with a strong heritage of bluewater multihull design.
This completely new-from-the-ground-up 45ft catamaran carries a huge array of advancements in design, technology and craftsmanship, while also retaining the most crucial Seawind DNA. It marks a new beginning for the company which is steeped in catamaran history – this being its first entry into the mid-40’s multihull market. Seawind became prolific on the back of designing cruising catamarans for couples seeking a boat in the 35-42ft range–and nearly 700 such boats have been built. The company has also had great success with the Seawind 1600 –a new 52ft offshore performance catamaran, of which 15 have been secured by buyers since it was recently launched.
Company founder Richard Ward, on the new direction created by entering the 45-ft market:
“In the past, there was no real need or strong demand to enter the 45-ft market. 45-foot designs of the past offered little more space –and often smaller beds than our current 41-ft Seawind 1260. They were also notably underperforming compared to our 52-ft Seawind 1600. But new technologies and a new generation of designers has come up with a boat that truly demands to be built. It’s a greatest hits parade of the last 10 years of catamaran design advancements, but we’ve gone way beyond that in adding new features which we think will be demanded everywhere in the future. It’s got the crucial Seawind characteristics of windows, doors and all-round ventilation strategy. It’s got our best twin-helms yet, with amazing visibility for a 45-footer. It’s fast, but carries all of your gear, and has all of the sailing ergonomics expected of us. This is going to be some adventure boat.”
The new Seawind 1370 features a galley-up design of a style familiar to those who have seen the award-winning Seawind 1600 interior. Open-plan living is the theme, with saloon, galley, cockpit and helms all on one level to achieve an incomparable open living area in a true sailors boat. For the new model, striking a balance between performance and lifestyle has been of upmost importance. The boat weighs in at only 11 tonnes–very light and nimble for a 45-footer, but crucially, the 1370 is capable of being heavily loaded with only the minimum of impact on performance. Seawind sees this as a key characteristic needed for modern cruisers, and notably missing in today’s market. The 1370 was designed to a strict brief which carefully balanced sea handling performance and live-aboard comfort.
For nearly four decades, the Australian Seawind brand and its founder Richard Ward has been gearing its catamarans around safe bluewater sailing, including performance, protection and ease of handling. Since purchasing Corsair trimarans in 2010 it has ramped up production and new model releases.
This 45ft model, a contemporary design with higher freeboard and reverse bows, looks like an appealing option for a couple cruising long distance. We like the look of the twin protected helmstations.
This segment of the market is listing the commonly found charter boats that are consistently performing well and generally appreciated on the market by agents and charter fleet operators. It takes into consideration the common traits and designs that works best for this market and later our advice and comparison will go into detail where certain models and destinations favor certain models and layouts more than others.

Arguably the most successful Fountaine Pajot to date. The market is for + 300 cats per year in this segment.
Unmistakably recognizable as a Fountaine Pajot, the Elba has high topsides and a flowing curve to the coachroof. The infusion technique resulted in well-finished surfaces of the grp parts and together with the use of the chosen woodwork give the interior an urban feeling.
FP Elba is build with the vacuum-infused technology. They use balsa for the sandwich construction. Sevaral places are full glasfibre (keel positions, engine cradles).
Some very important point:
The Elba boasts energetic lines and inverted bows, accommodating incredible interior living spaces, making her truly astonishing. This elegant new catamaran also has a newly designed helm station to improve handling, promising excellent performance.”
The Fountaine Pajot Elba 45 won the Best Charter Boat for 2020. According to the judges, the boat is well-built. It indicated that the Fountaine Pajot Elba 45 is a strong boat that will last a while. And the ‘four-by-four’ cabin-layout is ideal for chartering.
These are two catamarans that has innovative layout solutions and that maximizes lounge space and usage of space. They are not necessarily for the owner that wants sailing feeling or high-quality finishing and a yacht to do some extensive sailing on, but they are great at anchor!

Dufour is known for following new technologies and using innovative materials. A model of the Dufour Catamaran was revealed at Paris Boat Show 2017, the global launch at the Cannes 2019 in water boat show. It is designed by Umberto Felci and Lorenzo Giovannozzi. According to Michel Dufour: “We have developed this project with the vision to match an elegant and comfortable catamaran with outstanding sailing abilities.”
This first cat of the renowned Dufour shipyard offers some innovative ideas within the section of 45-48′ cruiser catamarans. In line with the current trend in multihull design the Dufour 48 cat has inverted bows, wedge shaped superstructure and negative shearline. Her easy accessible decks and real flybridge sets her appart from her competition. The starboard hull is accessible via two entrances which gives her a big boat boat feel as a bonus.
This segment of the market will contain typical cruiser-orientated yachts that are both optimized and commonly found in charter fleets and those that are used by their private owners as their weekender or holiday yacht for some shorter stays. With some modification these are also possible to use for longer stays and/or passages.
Some of the comprises: 11) Sailing Sensation vs Driving the boat 2) General CFP 3) Options and equipment 4) Charter Config vs Private Config 5) CFP vs Resale Value
These yachts are optimized for shorthanded sailing, shorter stays onboard and cruising along a coast or having access to land-comforts to refuel and stock up. They are very appreciated as private yachts and have a good track record of being successful in the charter market as well.

The Fountain Pajot Isla 40 is positioned in a different part of the market; less focused on sailing experience, more focussed on comfort and space. The Isla 40 replace the Lucia with very little changes being made on the engineering of the hull, it is almost 30 cm narrower than the Nautitech 40, but also 1.7 tons heavier and has more voluminous hulls to carry this extra weight.
The draft is about 14cm less than the Nautitech 40. Where the Nautitech has the ‘open’ layout with a large cockpit, the Lucia has in comparison a larger saloon. The Lucia offers the usual one steering position half way up on starboard in the cockpit against the superstructure main bulkhead.

The Nautitech 40 has been designed about seven years ago and has been improved along the years to the mature product, it is now. At the time the Fourty was designed, you had either fast cats without a superstructure or cruising cats with a voluminous nacelle. Naval architect Lombard came up with a total new approach to cat sailing; the Nautitech 40 open, a fast cruiser with an enlarged cockpit and reduced superstructure and a coach roof covering both. Until to today only one competitor has followed his bold design idea. Light weight is important, but stiffness and durability too, that’s why the shipyard has replaced many wooden structural parts for stiff and light composite stringers and bulkheads.
New for 2021 is that the shipyard will continue to focus on quality improvement – in terms of building and also aesthetics.
Noticeable improvements have been made on the sailing performance of the Nautitech 40 Open version 2 by optimising the rigging: Version 2 has a lower boom and a longer mast increasing sail area by 4 sqm. Alongside with improvements made on the reefing line system, it is again placing itself in the upper bracket of sailing capable cruising catamarans in the market.
These two yachts are primarily targeted towards the clients and owners that want a sailing catamaran that performance, that is ideal to live onboard, to hosts guests, and that has a versatile use and options. They are different to each other but offer the owner a strong, reliable, comfortable performance cruiser. Since they both host volume and space, they offer plenty for the charter market to desire. The Catana 50 premiered this year 2022, and the Nautitech 48 Open will be launched in 2023.
Modified for longer stays, more sailing pleasure, stronger build, suitable for charter with modified layouts, the optimal combination of a quality catamaran for private use and charter ownership

Judging from the reception the boat was getting at the show, this model should do well. This isn’t an “out and out” performance boat like a Marsaudon, but it offers a fantastic mix of performance and comfort that should prove popular. You get a nav station that looks like it belongs in Star Trek AND a full sized American fridge/freezer.
She’s stiff and strong thanks to decades of “carbon infusion” experience in building performance yachts at Catana, and with those daggerboards she should head upwind well.
