Review – Nautitech 48 Open vs. ITA 14.99 Comparison

MULTIHULL - CATAMARAN REVIEW & COMPARISON

In this review article we compare two yachts in the stylish live-aboard segment of the sailing multihull yacht-market for with Open Concepts: The highly anticipated Nautitech 48 Open, versus Italian masterpiece ITA 14.99

Elegant - Reliable - Sophisticated - two cruiser multihulls designed for comfortable & sporty sailing, and sophisticated & elegant living space

The popularity of multihulls (catamarans and trimarans) can be explained by their stability, manoeuvrability and comfortable and spacious living areas.

Most shipyards and designs cater predominantly for the charter market and others such Nautitech Catamarans and ITA Catamarans have since long focused on the live-aboard or private owners segment building nimble, reliable, comfortable and versatile yachts for extensive cruising or circumnavigation. On the catamarans market, the big shipyards focus only on comfort at the expense of performance and navigation and suggest a more “static” experience.

Different Shipyard sharing same Open Concept Idea

Build by two different shipyards, one in France and the other in Italy, but with similar design concepts and ethos of seaworthiness and technical sophistication found in similar shipbuilders such as Privilege, Outremere, ORC Marsaudon, C-Cat (Comar Yard), Catana, both the Nautitech 48 Open and the ITA 14.99 catamarans are a true testimony of brands that are capable of putting navigation back in the heart of the “sea experience”, without compromising on comfort, as it remains an important expectation for its core consumers.

The Open Concept – Indoor & Outdoor as one: the optimal live-aboard experience.

The advantages of this configuration are multiple:

  • Easily dock manoeuvres with a perfect view of the hull side and the possibility of mooring the rear without moving from the helm.
  • View of the water and sails whether windward or leeward.
  • Optimum steering sensation thanks to a steering system using short-circuit steering cable.
  • The maximum lowering of the boom, unlike the fly helm station or semi-fly, increases the effectiveness of the mainsail that comes flush with the roof and allows easy access to the mainsail for furling.
  • Security and optimized communication with the crew.
  • Having the cockpit and helms on the same level makes the boat more sociable under sail, and safer to move around.”

If you are unfamiliar with the two brands or the multihull models in question, here’s a brief introduction.

Nautitech Cataramans Shipyard

Nautitech Catamarans is a well-known brand that has developed a strong reputation for its ability to design highly durable and reliable catamarans. They are renowned for their commitment to delivering sailing experiences that are both enjoyable and comfortable. With their design derived from famous naval architect Marc Lombard, Nautitech Catamarans has redefined the concept of living at sea, providing clients with the opportunity to combine adventure with luxury. The brand’s focus on robustness and seaworthiness is a testament to its dedication to ensuring the safety of its clients. Nautitech Catamarans is a brand that can be trusted to deliver exceptional quality and comfort, making them the ideal choice for those looking to explore the world’s oceans in style.

It is in Rochefort-sur-Mer, the very cradle of shipbuilding and naval architecture, that Nautitech Catamarans has anchored its activity of construction of luxury catamarans. Anyone familiar with the world of multihulls can quickly appreciate the innovative nature of Nautitech Catamarans, the first manufacturer to understand and define the very spirit of a catamaran. Nautitech was also the first to propose the concept of open living onboard, which combines the saloon and cockpit into one spacious, functional living area. Understanding how important sensations at the helm is to their customers, Nautitech Catamarans places equal emphasis on sailing ability and comfort.

Nautitech DNA – The Concept:
COMFORT  – DOUBLE HELM- PERFORMANCE – RELIABILITY – SAFETY

The naval architect behind the design of Nautitech Catamarans, Marc Lombard, is himself a proud owner of a Nautitech 40 Open and an avid spokesman for the open concept design and sturdy design and construction of the Nautitech Catamarans. You will find that his designs and models come across many other reputable shipyards in the multihull segment such as: the ORC Maursadon, C-Cat, Neel Trimarans, Privilege Catamarans, etc.

The Nautitech Catamarans are well known for their rigidity and lightweight hull that leads to direct responsiveness at the helm. This is due to the superior construction technique and clever design of Marc Lombard.  The reinforcement zones, whether in unidirectional, bidirectional, or quadriaxial fabrics, are carefully determined to ensure better rigidity of the Nautitech catamarans. The quality of manufacture is guaranteed by a construction (high quality) of the hulls, deck, and roof, sandwich infused, and bonded.

The two helm stations are part of the fundamentals of NAUTITECH’s DNA. Indeed, it is the ideal position to helm at sea but also to maneuver at the port.

To date, Nautitech Catamarans has 200 employees, build ca 55-60 catamarans annually, and deliver three different models; Nautitech 40 Open, Nautitech 44 Open, and the new Nautitech 48 Open.

Nautitech 48 Open The Concept

The 48 Open features twin helm stations, the preferred sailor position

The Nautitech 48 Open has been designed based on the Nautitech principles and DNA plus the input and learning from the successful launching of the award-winning design of its smaller sister, the Nautitech 44 Open.

A distinctive feature of Nautitech catamarans that offers both function and safety by being fully integrated in the overall boat design.

The Open concept, a fundamental element of Nautitech’s DNA

No Borders between Inside and Outside: Enjoy every moment spent on board in a spacious living area where the saloon and cockpit are one. A layout designed around an original bar concept that puts sharing and flow at the heart of the Nautitech experience.

My SmartRoom®
An innovative multifunctional space designed for owners who are setting sail for a long adventure and are looking for a room that is both technical and practical.

Two refined interior atmospheres
To satisfy all desires, interiors are designed in two finishes; the original warm and welcoming walnut, and the refreshing light oak option, which highlights the construction details of the entire catamaran.

Construction Technique

When talking about a boat’s performance, many elements such as the shape of the hulls, length, weight or the sail surface are to be considered.

The shape of the hulls of a Nautitech catamaran has been studied in order to offer slimmer hulls to limit the wet surface, which, coupled with a high nacelle height gives the boat incomparable comfort at sea.

The quality of manufacture is guaranteed by a construction (high quality) of hulls, deck and roof but also sandwich infused and bonded. The use of foam (micro-perforated) PVC closed cell (divinycell®) and not balsa is another strength at Nutitech because it allows an optimized weight and increased durability.

The reinforcement zones, whether in unidirectional, bidirectional or quadriaxial fabrics, are carefully determined to ensure better rigidity of the Nautitec catamarans compared to other cruising performance catamarans in this segment.

The displacement plays an essential role on the performances because a heavier boat means an increased wet surface, and decreased performance. Weight is therefore a determining factor in the development and construction of our catamarans.

Nautitech uses vacuum infusion technology to make its composite parts (hull, deck, roof) to guarantee the best strength /weight ratio thanks to a higher fibre ratio. All the bulkheads used for the structure of the Nautitech are also built using this polyester sandwich infusion process, always with the aim of controlling the weight and solidity.

Indeed, the weight gain is 20% compared to a traditional process of contact bonding and much higher structural quality.

ITA 14.99 The Concept

Formidable Design & Innovation

The vision from the beginning was to produce a technologically advanced performance cruising catamaran using the latest proven hull design elements incorporating daggerboards, dual aft helm stations, a single-level cockpit/salon bridge deck, and a sail management system which could be managed by one
couple and easily sailed by one person from the safety of the cockpit.

Build in the “Silicon Valley” of the Nautical Industry

Designed by an international team of architects and designers, and made entirely in the Italian region of Marche, the Silicon Valley of the nautical industry, ITA 14.99 is a work of high naval engineering, built exclusively using only certified materials and cutting-edge techniques. The design and the latest technology used for ITA’s construction help in obtaining a lightweight yet extremely rigid structure, able to sustain any navigational stress, yet without compromising space and liveability. The special design of the hull interior elements, and the high quality of materials and construction techniques, make ITA 14.99 a catamaran among the safest in the market.

Innovative Build Process

The boat is epoxy infused and the lamination is mainly glass with carbon reinforcements. The ITA 14.99 has some pretty innovative build processes, too. The first mold consists of the inner/outer hulls, bridge deck, and both foredecks. Mold 2 is the deck, cockpit, aft crossbeam, transoms, and salon floor base and then mold 3 consists of the light coachroof/bimini.

By laminating these packs of components at the same time, they do away with the junctions that would need additional resin/cloth and she needs less fairing which all saves weight. The whole process produces a more rigid and homogeneous structure. She represents that step up from production boats of a similar size like the Nautitech Open 48 and the Fountaine Pajot Aura (the latter being more geared towards comfort).

Custom Designed Yachts

Each ITA 14.99 has been built to the owners’ preferences and demands. The difference between the ITA 14.99 and other models of similar size and pedigree is that the design and finishes are typical of real yachts and typical Italian taste: the attention to detail, the accurate study of the elements, the furnitures, the fabrics, everything is refined o give that timeliness design and atmosphere typical of Italian products  (ref: Nautor SWAN).

Nautitech 48 Open Exterior

The Nautitech 48 Open: the perfected model in Open Concept range

A word from Dirk and Viktor (Yacht-Match Group co-founders):

“The newest model in the Nautitech Catamarans range is the Nautitech 48 Open and she was presented to a selected audience and clients already in Cannes 2022 and again with a fully dedicated VR-presentation and booth at the International Multihull Show in France in April 2023. The first hull is going into production in June 2023 and she will be splashed, launched, and presented to the public right after the Cannes Yachting Festival in late September and October.

2023 has been a remarkable year for Nautitech so far; with its N44 Open model winning the European Yacht of the Year 2023 award, the shipyard has proven every single marketing promise and beyond. Moreover, it has positioned itself in a very special market segment, right between the classic cruisers and the performance catamarans making it a perfect choice for owners who want to live aboard and sail long distances with maximum comfort, but also feel very much secure about the strength, quality and durability of the boat.

The Nautitech 48 Open has been designed by the same team behind the development of the N44 Open and is an extension of what is possible and desirable adding 3-4 feet to an already award-winning concept and design, taking it one step further and establishing itself securely in the owners-version and long-distance cruising segment of the cruiser-performance market of multihulls.

The Nautitech 48 Open will bring the modular aspect of the N44 into a whole new meaning making the saloon much more versatile with a full-sized dining table with telescope/retractable poles that will be able to convert to a full-sized bed in the saloon for the night with an extra guest or for longer night passages. The Smart Room takes on a new shape, with 4 distinctly different versions for a modular living onboard and convertible space that is more practicable in use than let’s say a normal cabin space. The Nautitech 48 Open will offer more space, more stowage, larger and more countertop space and a true VIP guest Hull and cabin layout, with an exceptionally designed mid-ship bathroom with double sinks and a separate shower and toilette with plenty of light and ventilation. Making the Nautitech 48 Open a truly versatile and modular boat for families, couples with guests or for extensive cruising and live-aboard lifestyle.

For anyone coming from a monohull-sailing background like us, you will be pleased to hear that the reinvented helm position (the true DNA of Nautitech) has only been improved by the new bench and steering console adding to the marvellous idea and concept of the twin-aft steering positions.  Indeed, it is the ideal position to helm at sea but also to manoeuvre at the port.”

A word from Marc Lombard, the naval architect of the Nautitech catamarans:

“The «Open» range was created on the basis of this idea of balance, by proposing – in particular on a 40-feet catamaran – the «square-cockpit» living space concept without too formal a visual separation and without a double dining area, which would lead to excessive internal volume and unnecessary load on a boat of less than 46 feet. Nautitech catamarans are for those who feel that a boat must remain a boat above all, made for living aboard and sailing anywhere on our planet.”

Sleek Hull Lines and an Inverted Bow, the all new Nautitech 48 Open

An optimized hydrodynamic bottom and thin hulls below the waterline combined with a stepped hull chines to widen the hull and provide spacious above the waterline. The hull with its inverted bow and forward rake ensures a balanced boat that will insure a safer and easier boat to helm

The draft also has its importance: the lengthening of the fin and its height has a direct impact on the rise windward in a formed sea; which can represent a few hours of gain on near tacks. The higher the draft, the greater the rudder length, and the easier the boat will be at the helm.

The double helm station, a guarantee of safety and sensations

On the deck of a Nautitech, everything is made to be simple and reliable, easily manoeuvrable by a small crew.

The double helm station is a signature feature of the Open Line and the sailor’s choice. These two ideal helming positions provided an unobstructed view of the sails trim, helming and still being part of the entertainment area. The 44 open features a shorter steering system that provides a nimble starring experience.

Lower Main Sheet track location

A revolutionary lower main sheet track system that lowers the boom for enhanced performance, and better mainsail trim. The boom is lower for easier sail bag management.

By addressing all of these key factors, Nautitech can deliver a boat which is well-mannered and offers high performance.

The Nautitech Catamaran DNA
The 48 Open features twin helm stations, the preferred sailor design

A distinctive feature of Nautitech catamarans that offers both function and safety by being fully integrated in the overall boat design.

Enjoy every moment spent onboard in a spacious living area where the saloon and cockpit are one. A layout designed around an original bar concept that puts conviviality and flows at the heart of the Nautitech experience.

  • The Open concept, a fundamental element of Nautitech’s DNA
  • Light-weight; lowest weight in class
  • Potent sailing capacity: best-in-class sail area/weight ratio
  • Fast: narrow hulls on the waterline with inverted bows
  • Safe: crash boxes in the bows, sacrificial keels, helm positions in the hulls
  • Comfort: smooth ride in rough seas because of the centred weight distribution

ITA 14.99 Exterior

The ITA 14.99 belongs to the best in boat building in terms of innovation, finishing and handling.

A word from Dirk and Viktor (Yacht-Match Group co-founders):

“With her slim lines, best quality in finish, such as glass windows in the superstructure, well thought through deck layout and her dagger boards the ITA Catamaran 14.99 is definitely a must-have if you’re looking for a fantastic sailing experience. The leisurely and high-performance design of this catamaran is simply amazing. You’ll be able to enjoy a comfortable sailing adventure with its spacious cockpit, large sun deck and cosy interior. The boat is made from top-notch materials that ensure durability, strength, and safety – so no need to worry if things get a bit choppy in the waters. What’s more, even if you’re a bit inexperienced, this catamaran is easy to handle and manoeuvre. So whether you’re an experienced sailor or just starting out, ITA Catamarans 14.99 is the perfect choice for anyone who wants to enjoy a delightful and relaxing sailing experience in style.

A nimble and stylish blue-water cruiser

The ITA 14.99 comes with a self-tacking solent and a Lorima spreader-less rig which adds to her clean look on the water plus a big square top mainsail. A central winch on the aft crossbeam in the cockpit controls the reefing and halyard lines: it´s one of the tidiest setups on this range of catamarans in the market and takes a lot of cues from Catana and other highly appraised designs.

The traveller runs along the aft cross-beam. Board and furling lines plus all of the sheets are run to winches aft: this is a boat that has been well set up for short-handed sailing at speed.

No corners un-left in the design process

The design process and thought process about delivering the ITA 14.99 is derived from a combination of bringing what was missing on the multihull scene in combination with some proven design features found in the other brands that the design team had worked with in the past.

The result is a sleek-looking craft with stylish dreadnought bows and a refreshingly low-profile coachroof. Twin helm stations are perched on the aft coaming, which frees up the cockpit for socialising, without compromising the boat’s stability by putting the weight of the helm on the coachroof.

It is a very well-organised boat with lots of attention to detail.

The Easy Flow Concept

This kind of configuration also opens up the cockpit and saloon into one huge living space. I also like to see where everyone is on the boat at all times, especially if there are kids on board, but I understand that this is a personal preference.

With her generous sail plan and light displacement, she is a real sailor’s boat.

Both helms can have swing-out Jefa wheels so you can swing out even further if you like. The only thing I am not too keen on is the simple rests behind the helms on the boat I saw – there´s standing room only here. However, that this is customisable as I have seen plenty of renderings with helm seats- this was one example I saw at Cannes Yachting Festival.

The ITACatamarans’ DNA

Comfortable ride and a home on the water for client with high demands

Based on the design brief for a performance cruising catamaran the critical hull design fundamentals had to include more than ample payload carrying capacity, location of payload/machinery/tankage, efficient hull
shape for both performance and comfort (pitching), while keeping the weight as low as possible.

While hull shape and bridge deck-clearance have a significant influence on comfort at sea, there is a third key element to the comfort equation and that is keeping the ends of a catamaran light by compressing the weight of heavy equipment and tankage closer to the vessel’s CE (centre of effort) to reduce pitching.

Since most cruisers consist of one couple for sailing, the deck and running rigging had to be of a design so one person can easily manage all sailing manoeuvres from the safety of the cockpit.

The ITA 14.99 has been designed with the following elements…

  • Open Concept: Easy movement around the deck – interior and exterior as one.
  • Dual Helm: stations on deck level for excellent visibility under sail or power, redundancy should one rudder is damaged, and pure sailing pleasure. Both steering pedestals are equipped with JEFA pedestals with a direct linkage to rudders. The steering can also be swinging as an option. All mainsail lines and control lines are your helm.
  • Advanced Hull Shape: to reduce drag, shed water quickly, improved payload and planning, and less pitching.
  • High Freeboard: for more interior volume above the waterline and drier on deck.
  • High Bridgedeck clearance: for more comfort at sea
  • Impressive upwind sailing capacity

Nautitech 48 Open Interior

A word from Christophe Chedal Anglay (Nautitech Interior Designer):

“I took the best of the original concept, inside outside flowing spaces, and introduced a second layer of hot spots with versatile uses. The multifunction-raised countertop is the most iconic piece of that new concept. Close to the mast and located at the center of the saloon, is where people will join together, discuss the route, and probably “elevate their dream” with enthusiasm. Following the same concept, the innovative modular outside table opens a variety of options to either discuss with the skipper, check emails or enjoy a lunch in the shade. It is naturally also the preferred place to entertain your guests.”

THE OPEN CONCEPT

The Open concept is a fundamental element of Nautitech’s DNA. The spacious cockpit and luxurious saloon become one living space. The cockpit and the saloon merge both into one large living space where you can meet and relax.
Everything is on one level without steps.

My SmartRoom

An innovative multifunctional space designed for owners who are setting sail for a long adventure and are looking for a room that is both technical and practical.

Two refined interior atmospheres

To satisfy all desires, interiors are designed in two finishes; the original warm and welcoming walnut, and the refreshing light wood option, which highlights the construction details of the entire catamaran.

Sharing moments at every stage of the journey

The multifunction-raised countertop is the most iconic piece of that new 44 Open concept. Close to the mast and located at the centre of the saloon, is where people will join together, discuss the route, and probably “elevate their dream” with enthusiasm. Following the same concept, the sofa corner offers a cocooning and modular space for the children’s nap as well as for night watches.

A redesigned Kitchen Area

The best materials have been selected in order to offer a fully integrated galley, with redesigned finishes and equipment. The kitchen has an easy-to-clean acrylic resin worktop, integrating the sink and the cooking plates, with all the necessary comfort. An expanded fridge capacity featuring a double-drawer fridge.

A Forward Facing Chart table designed for navigation

The Nautitech 48 Open features an enhanced facing the forward multi-function desk, used as a navigation table, night watch or to work from your boat.

Updated Design Features

Some of the new features that are upgraded and are new compared to the smaller Nautitech 44 Open are:

  • A redesigned Kitchen Area – U-Shaped: more countertop space and stowage than N44
  • Large convertible Dining Table in Saloon: for up to 8 guests (also bed for 2)
  • Unique interior layout centred around real-life usage
  • High-level interior finishing and trendy materials
  • More window surfaces than on any Nautitech
  • Best-in-class sailing performance because of  sharp bows and deep keels
  • Easy and safely accessible mainsail: enabled by the ultra-low boom.
  • Immense roof surface: for an extensive number of solar panels or lounging
  • Only catamaran with a SMART ROOM: modular living and versatile utility room as an option.

ITA 14.99 Interior

A word from the couple Dona and Gavi, owners of an ITA 14.99 “WAIATA”:

“We’ve just completed our first sailing season on Waiata, our recently purchased ITA Catamaran 14.99…We had done our research over a couple of years in search of the ideal Catamaran for us. This included visits to Outremer, Catana, and Gunboat factories. Although all these brands have their own special attributes, it was only the ITA Catamaran that ticked all the boxes for us. We are so happy with the boat; she is all and more than we expected. Her design, layout, sails, electric motors (Oceanvolt), living areas and comfort are second to none. She sails fast, easily out-pacing other boats and is light and easy for the two of us to handle alone.

The team at ITA Catamarans have been excellent in terms of their customer service and training in all areas of the boat. This is one of the unique advantages of having an artisan produced boat by a passionate group of people who are sailors themselves, they go the extra mile to ensure new owners are fully trained and comfortable to sail her.”

That first impression that last forever…

As soon as you step inside the salon, you’ll be bathed in natural light thanks to the expansive windows that provide stunning views from any angle. The U-shaped galley on the starboard side is thoughtfully designed for optimal functionality, especially in rough waters. The nav station is well-positioned, facing forward for easy navigation. The finishing on this Italian-made boat is exquisite, with an attractive teak veneer on foam sandwich for furniture, which not only looks great but also lowers weight. The working surfaces and large glass windows are well-crafted, without any compromising on quality.

The 14.99 catamaran is available in both a 3-cabin owner’s version and a 4-cabin option with flexible configurations, such as queen, office, and bunk beds to suit your needs. The owner’s version has an enclosed stand-up shower forward in the starboard hull and ample storage space ahead of the owner’s suite. Meanwhile, the port hull features a roomy shared head with a shower and up to 2 cabins, with elegant and simple designs. Unlike many performance cats, such as the Marsaudon Composites TS5, which can be a bit spartan, the Italian design of this catamaran channels comfort and speed with warm furnishings that make it feel like home.

Not just the hull design is proper yachting: the interior is Italian high-end and built to last

All interior furniture is high-quality shock-resistant real wood with a selection of laminates as standard and optional veneers offered painted, high gloss or satin finish. Complimenting the interior are beautiful high-quality Italian hardware, fixtures, and appliances.

Tempered safety glass wraps the entire upper deck with unobstructed views, wide-opening sliding doors to the cockpit, all hull windows, and large aft windows located in each aft stateroom.

Attention to the details is perceivable as soon as you walk onboard, as well as the high level of quality Italian craftsmanship in design and construction finish.

Summary of the key interior highlights :
  • Open style layout with seamless inside/ outside flow and an unobstructed 360° view through tinted Safety Glass.
  • All furniture is custom crafted with quality shock-resistant real wood, cored for lightness and mechanical strength
  • Large U-shaped settee with comfortable seating area cushions and wide storage capacity beneath all of the seating
  • Fixed dining table which can accommodate 8-10 guests, which can become a bed (OPT)
  • GALLEY Starboard U-shaped galley with Krion countertop opening unto the cockpit
  • Flush-mounted induction stove top 2 zones and separate built-in electric oven with hatch overhead
